Beware the Portuguese Man-O-War

The waters surrounding Tobago are safe, by and large. But there are certain areas where hazardous marine life lurks. Visitors are advised to stick to beaches which are recommended as safe swimming and diving areas free of such dangers as well as dangerous undercurrents.

One specimen of hazardous marine peril in Tobago waters is the Portuguese Man-O-War, a marine invertebrate related to the Jellyfish. Its habitat is the surface of open oceans and warm water seas. It floats and with no source of propulsion, drifts with the wind and tides. It can be identified by its translucent purplish appearance. The Portuguese Man-O-War has dangerous tentacles that can reach 15 meters deep and are highly toxic. Its sting causes severe pain in humans which can last for up to an hour. The sting produces red welts that remain on the skin for 2 to 3 days. The sting could lead to an acute allergic reaction which can result in fever and shock and in extreme cases even death. This invertebrate tends to be seasonal for which a close watch is maintained around the island.
