Tobago’s national bird

The Rufous-vented Chachalaca is the national bird of the island which, on Tobago, is better known as the Cocrico. These are medium sized birds, much like a turkey, with a small head and a long broad tail which live in the trees. They are a noisy species with a distinctive cry which they vent at dawn. The Cocrico features on the coat of arms of Trinidad and Tobago along with its Trinidad counterpart, the Scarlet Ibis. Strangely, the Cocorico is now considered a pest on Tobago where steps are being taken to control its proliferation.

Many visitors to Tobago visit the island to see its birdlife. The islands have 430 species of which 250 are native and breed locally. The islands are home to many migrating species in transit on their way south.

The Bacolet Beach Club has hosted many amateur and professional ornithologists as well as photographers attracted by the spectacular bird life on Tobago. This beach resort hotel is also a popular vacation destination for visitors from Europe and North America who wish to enjoy a relaxing vacation away from it all. It is the island’s finest boutique hotel which offers all the comforts and amenities needed by the modern traveler with exceptional service as well.
