TOBAGO VACATIONS: THE HISTORY OF TOBAGO
The island of Tobago makes a great beach vacation spot for history lovers. Named after the tobacco cultivated by the locals, Tobago existed independently from Trinidad for several centuries. And while the great Christopher Columbus spotted the island in the 13th century, he made no attempts to land or colonize it.
But as years passed, the European powers got particularly interested in Tobago’s fertile soil and strategic harbor. Soon, the English, Dutch, and French transformed the island into a battle field. Tobago changed hands more than thirty times before being ceded to the British in the 1600’s, who used it to grow cotton, sugar, and indigo plantations with the help of thousands of Africans slave labor. The 1700’s saw French invasion in the island, but by 1814 the island was again ceded to Britain.
In the late 1800’s, during a stage of economic decline, Britain seized the island to Trinidad as the administrative ward. And finally after years of struggle and slavery, Tobago achieved independence from Britain in 1962 and became the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in the year 1976, allowing locals to increase business by popularizing Trinidad and Tobago vacations.
Today the island is serene and steeped in history with several forts and batteries that dot its landscape. There is a lot to see and experience in Tobago, such as the clear blue seas, wide sandy beaches, colorful coral reefs, Trinidad and Tobago carnival, bird watching, drift diving, kayaking, and biking.
