Carnival in Tobago
Tobago is gearing up for the island’s biggest celebration. This year Carnival will be held on March 7th and 8th. Carnival is the most happening event in Trinidad and Tobago’s cultural calendar marked by an influx of international tourists. The Carnival calendar features numerous cultural parades that culminate in a much awaited, vibrant street parade on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. Preparations start a year in advance. Carnival is known for its lively dancing to the pulsating rhythm of various local bands. Calypso, the traditional form of music is of late being replaced by the soca the homegrown music form. Carnival is the event when islanders and dancers are at their resplendent best in revealing costumes of vivid hues. Other features are the numerous limbo competitions and stick-fighting amongst other traditional competitive events. Needless to say, much of the gaiety is fuelled by copious quantities of local rum.
