Soca, the Music of the Islands
Soca is Trinidad and Tobago’s music gift to the world. The name is a fusion of two great music forms – ‘So’ from American Soul and ‘Ca’ from Calypso. The origin of Soca is mired in a proliferation of musical roots. This music form is an amalgam of Soul, Calypso, Funk, Electric Blues, Rhythm and Blues, Hip Hop, Reggae, Chutney Music, Rap and other music forms intrinsic to the Caribbean islands. Soca has replaced Calypso as the traditional music of the Carnival. While Soca is the main music of Trinidad and Tobago, these islands have an abundance of other music forms such as Calypso, Steelpan, Picong, Parang, Pichakaree, Rapso and Chutney, a blend borrowed from the large Asian population. Many of the local bands will be performing these music forms during Carnival on March 7th and 8th this year.
Like Soca, another Tobago icon is the Bacolet Beach Club, the island’s best known beach resort hotel. It nestles between its own private beach and a verdant hillside. The Bacolet Beach Club features an architecture derived from a delicate blend of African, Asian and European origins but typically Caribbean in character. And like its architecture, its restaurant – The Havana Bar and Restaurant offers a menu of a delectable fusion of fragrant spices and ethnic tastes.
