Freshwater Fishing in Tobago
Tobago is synonymous with sea water fishing. People visit from all over the world for year-round offshore game fishing in the island’s surrounding waters. Tobago’s coastline, with deep seas that run onto the continental shelf, is an ideal place for feedstock that thrives in its warm, clear waters. All conditions are perfect for good offshore game fishing, but what about freshwater fish? This is not as well known as offshore fishing but still has a faithful following of diehard anglers that come year after year to fish in streams that run off from Hillsborough Dam. Freshwater species are limited, primarily to freshwater mullet, loaches and minnows. During floods and periods of uncustomary high tides you might expect to catch flounder, tarpon or snook at the mouths of streams and rivers nearer the sea. Arguably the most popular fishing spot is in the Courland River near Plymouth. Freshwater fishing, though not as popular as its salt water equivalent, nonetheless draws many sports fishermen from Europe and North America.
