Swiss Family Robinson
Swiss Family Robinson was a 1960 American movie shot on location in Tobago with a well known contemporary cast. Various other locations were considered from Jamaica to the Galapagos Islands before the producers decided on Tobago. While it was perfect in all respects the only drawback was the lack of animals on the island which form an important element in the movie. The problem was resolved by flying in a veritable menagerie of tropical birds, reptiles and animals complete with a battery of trainers.
The wreckage for the movie had to be built on a scaffolding at sea for which a team of divers were used. The movie required careful planning but nonetheless the going wasn’t easy. The scenes where the animals and supplies were floated ashore off the wreckage took 10 days alone. Nonetheless the movie was a financial success which received positive reviews from the critics. In all it grossed $40m, the highest earner in 1960.
