Caribbean Steel Pan

Caribbean Steel Pan, also just known as Steelpan, is a musical instrument with roots in Trinidad and Tobago. It is also the national instrument of the Republic. The true-blue ‘pan’ was made from discarded 55 gallon oil drums, a practice since discontinued. The pan is struck by a pair of rubber-tipped drumsticks, or pan sticks. Some expert ‘pannists’, as they are better known, are sufficiently adept to use two pan sticks in each hand. One of the best known percussion steel bands is known as Tamboo Bamboo. Interestingly, drumming had its origins as a form of communication with the early African slaves, a practice that was subsequently banned by the British colonial masters in the late 1700s.
