Tobago Protects her Rainforests
While environmentalists around the world shout themselves hoarse about depleting forest cover and its disastrous implications on the ecology, the tiny island of Tobago leads the way in rainforest protection. Tobago’s rainforests were declared a ‘reserve’ as far back as 1756, the oldest protective order in the Western Hemisphere. Currently T & T’s Main Ridge Forest Reserve is all of a zealously protected 3,956 hectares in size. It is home to a wealth of biodiversity – almost 6,000 different species - of small animals, birds and snakes, apart from a botanist’s delight of plant life. But rainforests, as Tobago has proved, are not just about plant and wildlife. They perform many other functions critical to planet earth’s health and well being, and by extension, that of the human race. Tobago’s rainforests have a diversity of trees that grow in excess of 50 m in height which form a canopy layer.
While Tobago is best known for its pristine beaches, the rainforests are equally impressive with their abundance of flora and fauna. Many eco-conscious visitors are now visiting the island for a Rainforest Tour through what could one day be the world’s last surviving rainforest.
