Tobago Vacation for Bird Lovers

Bird-watching is one of the most fascinating activities for visitors on a Tobago vacation. The island boasts of over 200 recorded species of birds including the red-crowned woodpecker, red-billed tropic bird, the white-tailed sabrewing, and chachalaca which is also known to be the national bird of Tobago.

Species:

Around the coasts of Tobago one can see the magnificent frigate birds flying high above the sea looking for fish. With their typical long tails sometimes divided into a fork, they often terrorize the smaller birds, grabbing the fish from their beaks. Brown pelicans generally dive from great heights into the water, scoop up fish in their huge pouched bills, while Booby birds with their pointed, long wings glide low over the sea.

Bird Sanctuaries:

Travel to Trinidad and Tobago to see some of the most interesting bird sanctuaries. For instance, Adventure Farm and Nature Reserve has over fifty species of bird spread across 12-acre of its organic fruit estate. Several professional guides regularly end their tours with a stopover at the farm as it is a 'must visit' for all bird lovers. The Grafton Caledonia Bird Sanctuary is another paradise which is home to flocks of mot-mot, cocrico, bananaquit and other species, several of which take food right out of your hand. Apart from this, the unpopulated island of Little Tobago is also known to be a seabird sanctuary since the beginning of the 20th century. The birds found here include frigate birds, red-footed boobies and brown boobies, terns and the spectacular red-billed tropicbird.
